AWARE Improves Girls’ Confidence in Themselves and Their Abilities

Respected attorney Bruce Weyhrauch has owned and managed his eponymous law practice in Juneau, Alaska, since 1998. Involved with his community, Bruce Weyhrauch supports local organizations such as AWARE, a shelter for women.

With the mission of eliminating all forms of violence against women, AWARE provides comprehensive prevention and education programs regarding domestic violence and child abuse. One program offered by the organization is Girls on the Run (GOTR).

GOTR is an afterschool program for girls from third to eighth grade. Participants meet bi-weekly for 10 weeks to receive positive life lessons, participate in discussions, and play games that build their self-esteem, encourage them to express themselves, and improve their attitudes toward themselves and their bodies. The program also encourages girls to take part in local community projects where they learn the power that comes with service.

At the end of the program, the girls take part in a 5K run. Completing the run boosts their confidence in their own abilities, and shows them that whatever their minds will, they can achieve.
